The successful candidate will be working in the Strategic Planning Team in one of the country’s largest planning authorities. The post will suit a planner with 5 or more years’ experience of working in a policy team in a busy planning department.

You will lead on the most complex professional work with minimal supervision, including leading project work and other staff.

You will lead on one or more local plan topic areas and on the production of related supplementary planning documents.

You will also provide input to corporate policies and programmes.

We are particularly looking for someone with experience of drafting and applying economic development and employment land policies and/or retail policy. You should also have strong data management skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for this post. Good negotiation and project management skills are also essential qualities. You should be customer focussed and work well in a team. You will need a good working knowledge of current planning legislation and be able to demonstrate an awareness of ongoing legislative changes and their implications.

You should possess excellent ICT skills and a working knowledge of GIS would be an advantage. Analysis and evaluation of planning information will be an important part of the role and you should be able to produce work that demonstrates a good attention to detail. The ability to manage a high workload to achieve specific deadlines is essential.

The Council has a hybrid working arrangement with officers spending at least 40% of their time in the office and the remainder working from home.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
