Job Requirements/Description

Job Title: Port Operator

Location: Port of Dundee

Hours of Work: 8:00am–5:00pm Monday to Thursday and 8:00am–4:00pm Friday, totalling 39 hours per week.

Flexibility is required, as working days and hours may be subject to change from time to time to meet business needs. Additional paid hours are regularly available throughout the year and are paid at the employee's standard hourly rate.

Compensation:

Starting salary = £36,563

After 4 Months = £39,175

About The Role

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Safely load and discharge vessels, including the operation of a range of plant.
  • Work between the quayside, sheds, warehouses and ship holds, following instructions for the movement, dispatch and storage of cargo.
  • Participate in pre-shift briefings and carry out daily plant checks, reporting any defects or incidents promptly.
  • Operate in specialist storage areas where required (e.g. grains), wearing appropriate PPE and following area-specific safety guidance.
  • Carry out safe banksman/slinging duties in line with training.
  • Support warehousing activities including stock rotation, record-keeping and maintaining high housekeeping standards.
  • Participate in mandatory training and, where appropriate, progress into advanced plant or crane operations.
  • Carry out general housekeeping and basic maintenance tasks when cargo operations are not underway.
  • Undertake any other duties that support port operations.


What are we looking for?

  • Experience in an operational, industrial or logistics environment.
  • Valid plant operation certificates (e.g., FLT) or willingness to obtain them through training.
  • Understanding of safe systems of work and a strong personal commitment to Health & Safety.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong teamwork ethic with good communication skills.
  • Reliable, flexible and willing to work overtime, including weekends, when required.
  • Comfortable working at height and in confined spaces.
  • Full right to work in the UK.
  • Full driving licence, valid in the UK.


It is important to us that you are a good team member, who is also able to work independently. You will need to think critically, analyse situations and develop practical solutions to overcome obstacles, minimise delays and maintain operational efficiency.

The Port environment is fast paced and busy so you must also be able to demonstrate a really good understanding of the importance of Health and Safety in a heavily industrialised setting.
