Full-time role

Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality teaching across both Modern Studies and Geography within a full-boarding, nurturing school environment. The postholder will support pupils in developing a strong understanding of political, social, environmental, and global issues, while contributing to their wider personal development. The role requires a commitment to Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), active pastoral care, and involvement in the broader life of the school community.

Key ResponsibilitiesLearning and Teaching
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons across Modern Studies and Geography for both Broad General Education (BGE) and Senior Phase, including SQA qualifications (National 4/5, Higher, Advanced Higher).
  • Teach key subject content including:
  • Modern Studies: democracy, human rights, social inequality, international relations, and political systems
  • Geography: physical and human environments, sustainability, global issues, and environmental change
  • Adapt teaching approaches to meet the needs of a diverse boarding pupil cohort.
  • Promote critical thinking, enquiry-based learning, and independent study skills.
  • Use a wide range of assessment approaches to monitor progress and raise attainment.
  • Integrate digital tools and real-world contexts to enhance learning and engagement.
  • Incorporate fieldwork and outdoor learning where appropriate.
Curriculum Development
  • Contribute to the development of a coherent and dynamic Humanities curriculum across both subjects.
  • Support interdisciplinary learning, reflecting links between geography, politics, and global citizenship.
  • Participate in moderation, course planning, and quality assurance processes.
  • Ensure curriculum delivery reflects current global, environmental, and political developments.
Pastoral Care and Boarding Contribution
  • Play an active role in pastoral care, supporting pupils' wellbeing within a full-boarding environment.
  • Build positive, supportive relationships and act as a role model for young people.
  • Contribute, as required, to residential duties or supervision rotas.
  • Support pupils' personal development in line with GIRFEC principles.
Wider School and Co-Curricular Contribution
  • Participate fully in the co-curricular programme, such as:
  • Debate clubs, Model United Nations, or current affairs societies
  • Eco groups or sustainability initiatives
  • Outdoor education and fieldwork activities
  • Organise and lead educational visits, field trips, and residential experiences.
  • Contribute to whole-school events and community life.
Assessment and Reporting
  • Prepare pupils for SQA coursework, assignments, and examinations in both subjects.
  • Track and monitor pupil attainment and progress.
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to support improvement.
  • Produce reports and engage effectively with parents/carers.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
  • Engage in ongoing continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Stay informed about current affairs, environmental issues, and global developments relevant to both subjects.
  • Uphold safeguarding, child protection, and school policies.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across academic and pastoral teams.
Person SpecificationEssential Qualifications
  • Degree in Geography, Modern Studies, Politics, or a closely related subject
  • PGDE Secondary (or equivalent teaching qualification)
  • GTCS registration (or eligibility)
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Strong knowledge of Curriculum for Excellence and SQA frameworks across one or both subjects
  • Ability to teach both Modern Studies and Geography (or willingness to develop across both areas)
  • Excellent classroom management and organisational skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to inspire interest in global, political, and environmental issues
  • Commitment to inclusion, wellbeing, and holistic pupil support
  • Willingness to contribute to boarding and school life
Desirable
  • Experience teaching National Qualifications up to Higher/Advanced Higher in either or both subjects
  • Experience in a boarding or residential school setting
  • Experience leading fieldwork, outdoor education, or debate-based activities
  • Involvement in extracurricular or leadership programmes
Working Conditions
  • Full-time role in line with SNCT agreements
  • Requirement to contribute to boarding life and co-curricular activities
  • Term-time position with additional structured duties beyond classroom teaching
